This God is For You

Are you weak? Is your soul in turmoil?  Have you come to the end of yourself and don’t know where to turn?  If so, the God of the Bible is calling out to you with an offer you shouldn’t refuse.  He is offering you a purpose and a family.  The Bible describes God in the following terms:

“A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.” (Psalm 68: 5-6)

Are you strong? Are you self sufficient? Have you accomplished so much in your life that you do not need God? If so, the following verses were written about you:

“They utter speech, and speak insolent things; all the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. They break in pieces Your people, O Lord, and afflict Your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, ‘the Lord does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob understand.’” (Psalm 94:4-7)

God is willing to save all of us.  If we our honest we will realize that each one of us is belongs in both categories.  We are all powerless, orphaned, yet malicious and insolent.  But God can save us from both predicaments: our weakness as well as our wickedness.  God’s answer is not through ritual or good deeds, for then some people would have a greater opportunity than others.  Instead, salvation comes through a simple, yet radical choice.  That’s why the Bible says:

“For you do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise. (Psalm 51:16-17)”

God will not turn away from the needy soul who recognizes that belief in the power of Jesus’ death on the cross is the only way into heaven.  Jesus is the “one way” to the Father (John 14:6). Right now God is your angry judge, incensed at all the things you have done to your fellow humans.  But if you repent and believe in Christ, your relationship with God will be forever changed:

“May God be merciful to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, That your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations.” (Psalm 67:1-2)

The power to change you is not yours: it is God’s.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.” (Psalm 51:10-13)
